For children with learning difficulties, the road to reading acquisition is difficult and at times it is paved with aggression, uncertainty,
disappointment and sadness. Children with learning difficulties need specialist intervention when mainstream programs fail to assist them with
their reading. The Australian Literacy Clinic provides children with learning difficulties that opportunity to learn to read in an environment
that is suited to their needs, where they are encouraged, supported and challenged to succeed.
Having worked in a number of educational settings, both overseas and within Australia over the past 15 years, I have been able to use that
experience and knowledge to develop a reading program that has now reached 400 children through my Clinics in Maitland and Wallsend in the
Hunter Valley. In addition to such experience and qualifications including a Masters of Education, Graduate Diploma of Education, Graduate
Certificate in TESOL and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Languages, I am now fortunate to be undertaking a PhD in Education through the
University of Newcastle. These studies will allow me to focus on the environmental factors that impact the reading achievement levels of
children in remedial reading settings. Upon completing my Doctorate, my plan is to continue to change the way remedial reading programs are
implemented within our school system.
The Australian Literacy Clinic continues to assist children, parents and teachers through the exciting journey of learning how to read. Due to
the outstanding success of the The Australian Literacy Clinic, we constantly receive referrals from Psychologists, Paediatricians, Speech
Therapists, Occupational Therapists, GPs and other Health Professionals. Our parents have been the backbone to our success.

They have seen the results in their children and continue to believe in the program. It is because of this support that we now have two busy
and successful Clinics in Maitland and Wallsend.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who have allowed me the honour of teaching their child. I must also thank those
amazing children who have given me some of the most rewarding moments in my teaching career. It is the joy on such precious faces that gives me
the enthusiasm and energy to do what I love, to teach children how to read.
Happy reading,
Amanda
